Adriano Palman – KUH

One of the most popular summer tourist destinations in the Mediterranean basin is Croatia, which in recent days has reopened the borders to international tourism. The pandemic situation saw only 2,246 Coronavirus positive cases and 103 deaths (according to data from Johns Hopkins University), and therefore the country, after taking all the necessary precautions, decided to restore oxygen to its tourism economy. To learn more about the situation in the outdoor accommodation segment, CampingBusiness spoke with Adriano Palman, director of the Croatian Camping Federation (KUH), which brings together over 90% of the almost 900 structures in the country.

What is the current situation of campsites in Croatia? We were among the first to open the tourism and camping sector, starting two weeks ago. It was urgent for us to do so, because while the other Mediterranean countries rely on a share of domestic tourism ranging from 50 to 80 percent, in our campsites we just arrive at 2.5%. For this reason, it was essential to reopen. Among the five most important markets for us, the Slovenian one is in second place. Neighboring Slovenia has a health situation similar to ours, so we first tested the situation with this country and then we reopened the borders to the others. The campsites started to open from May 15, but until June 20 the majority will not be operational. Today about 185 structures are open, while 700 are still closed. In total, 700 are family-run, with a capacity of 50 to 100 people, and the remaining 200 are medium and large structures. It should be emphasized that, before the decision to reopen, our association was in constant contact with the government and all the agencies involved. A series of analyzes of the health situation and a safety assessment were made, both on Croatia in general and on the facilities, and the decision was based primarily on the positive evaluation of the current health situation and on the premise that to all guests can be guaranteed the maximum levels of safety and comfort.
