23 million fewer overnight stays, one in five jobs lost. These are the estimates for the 2020 season that Monica Saielli, president of Italian Assocamping Confesercenti, shared with the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore and TG5 in recent days, thus painting a gloomy picture for the entire sector. In monetary terms, around 35/40 percent of the annual turnover, normally around 5 billion euros (including related industries), could be lost. To these should be added the losses of the catering sector, which is worth another 3 billion.
The numbers published by the financial newspaper are merciless and report, based on the findings of Assocamping, a deadweight loss of 10 million overnight stays during the lockdown period. The situation then saw a -50/60% in June and -30/40% in July. In August the numbers were more similar to those of the past year and now hopes are pinned on this month of September.
In addition to the period of the total spring lockdown, the lack of foreign tourism, which has collapsed vertically and only partially compensated by the increase in Italian tourism, weighs heavily. In its article, Il Sole 24 Orealso reports the comments of Luca Belenghi, CEO of Human Company, and Valerio Vezzola, CEO of Baia Holiday, both agreeing in confirming an average decrease, from the beginning of the season, of around 50 percent.
