Everyone talks about summer 2020 as the great opportunity for the outdoor tourism sector. Until now, this expectation was born substantially from a series of surveys conducted in Europe and North America on the attitudes and intentions of the tourists. Although the data agree that the Covid-19 pandemic will more easily push vacationers towards this form of tourism, the true data, the only ones that can certify a trend, are still hiding. Waiting to find out if the expectations will be confirmed, the first concrete numbers come from a European company that deals with the rental of recreational vehicles between private users.
In the first two weeks of June, the Yescapa platform, which manages over 7,800 vehicles and boasts around 400,000 registered users, recorded a 200% growth in the number of bookings, reaching 6,000. In Italy, where there are more than 2,000 confirmed requests, the increase was 120%.
According to the data collected by the company, there are two elements that characterize this Summer 2020. The first is the increase in the number of people approaching the world of motorhomes for the first time: in June, the registrations of new users who declare, when booking, to be at their first experience went up by 45%. The second element is the net prevalence of local tourism. If, in the past, 46% of reservations for the Italian market came from abroad, in this post-Covid-19 summer the percentage has substantially zeroed: 99 percent of requests are in fact from Italy and for destinations in the peninsula.
