The second edition of the Master in Sustainable Outdoor Hospitality Management (SOHM) will start soon. Registration is now open and will be open until August 15th on the Breda University of Applied Sciences (BuaS) website. This Campmaster is an intensive master’s degree “on the road”, designed to learn not only the theory but above all the best practice about sustainability management in outdoor accommodation facilities.

The organizers of SOHM have involved a series of high-quality facilities in the program to allow students to experience first-hand what sustainable management of outdoor hospitality means.

Why a master’s degree in outdoor sustainability?

The demand for highly qualified professionals, able to manage the business with regard to sustainability and in cooperation with local authorities, is growing rapidly in open-air accommodation, as well as competition grows.

That is why three European faculties have developed this new multiple master’s programme, combining theory and practice, with a focus on strategic management of large-scale campsites. We are talking about BUas (Breda University of Applied Sciences), the University of Girona in Spain, and the University of Rijeka in Croatia.

The Master SOHM is designed and implemented in close collaboration with the campsite industry. Many important companies in the sector have become partners in the project, starting with LeadingCampings of Europe, the Associació de Càmpings de Girona (Spain) and the Croatian Camping Union. And PiNCAMP and Carthago have also embraced this ambitious project.

Registrations are now open

Application for new generations of students is open until August 15th. Also, scholarship applications are open. This Campmaster offers scholarships to all students up to €5.000 per student!

There are already five students’ applications done: from Spain, Netherlands, Iran, Italy, and Croatia. For those who want to join this marvelous international team of students in Breda this Autumn it’s time to subscribe because the clock is ticking.

The students’ opinions

The master’s professors have collected some stories and opinions from students who subscribed last year and are about to start their second and final year. Let’s see what they have to say about their experience.

The story of Jola

Delivering hospitable service to guests is a passion that I discovered during my bachelor’s degree. Unfortunately, I graduated during the pandemic which resulted in a totally different job than expected: account manager B2B in the fashion industry. A job that I performed with a lot of delight but I was missing something.

Then this master came along combining all aspects that I was missing: field trips giving inspiration directly out of the work field, not an indoor office job and a space to learn about all aspects of camping management.

My personal interest for the future lies in concept development within the outdoor hospitality industry, using my creative mind that sees opportunities and possibilities all around. Personally, I would recommend this study to anyone who wants to become a specialist in regards to the camping industry as you learn all aspects of operational management!

Margot’s experience

I specifically chose the Master in Sustainable Outdoor Hospitality Management because I am particularly interested in the eco-lodging industry. Over the past two semesters I already gained so much knowledge and hands-on experience in promoting sustainable practices within the outdoor hospitality industry. The courses provided a deeper understanding of environmental management, sustainable tourism, and eco-friendly business operations.

Through projects, guest lectures and collaborations with industry professionals, I already developed skills in creating and implementing sustainability strategies that enhance guest experiences while minimizing environmental impact. So far, this master has provided me with the expertise to lead and innovate in the field of sustainable outdoor hospitality.

Danica’s point of view

I have been working in the tourism sector, specifically in the camping business, for most of my life. After finishing my bachelor’s degree in Tourism Business Operations, I was eager to learn more about the industry. I see this Master in Sustainable Outdoor Hospitality Management as the perfect opportunity to expand my knowledge and further develop my skills and know-how.

The program is a challenge, as well as a great opportunity to learn from tourism experts, and an inspiring and motivating environment for personal and professional growth. In the first two semesters, we focused on the theoretical part of tourism destination management in Breda, and in Croatia, we had a more practical semester focusing on business operations.

I look forward to the semester in Girona where we will dive into strategic planning and tourism management. I hope to use what I’ve learned to make an impact and contribute to the sustainable development of the outdoor hospitality business in Europe.

Eva’s opinion

During my bachelor’s degree in International Facility Management, I focused on the combination of hospitality and sustainability. This inspired me to make the hospitality industry as sustainable as possible, leading me to pursue the master’s in Sustainable Outdoor Hospitality Management.

The first two semesters of the master’s program were very insightful. We studied destination management and marketing strategies in the Netherlands and then learned about the operational side and industry challenges in Croatia.
