What is it like to study in Girona, Spain? This is our new article dedicated to the master’s degree in outdoor hospitality management. As we have already mentioned, the three universities of Breda (Netherlands), Opatija (Croatia), and Girona (Spain) offer a new degree course called CampMaster. The course aims to train professionals who will develop new accommodation activities such as campsites and tourist villages in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The study program will start in September and applications to participate are open until August 15th. Girona is a very interesting place to study, that’s why.
Girona, a livable city full of life
The city of Girona is a landmark city in Catalonia. Although it is not a very large city, it stands out for its colorful old town full of history, the Barri Vell, its proximity to the Costa Brava and the wide range of activities it offers: sporting, cultural, for young people but also for the whole family. Girona’s center city has numerous restaurants, shops, museums, gyms, and it offers plenty of activities so that its inhabitants and the tourists who visit it always have something to do.
If we talk about museums, we find from the Museum of Cinema and Art to history museums. There is also the Caixaforum Girona, a cultural center that offers exhibitions of all kinds. We suggest enjoying a good ice cream from Rocambolesc, in Plaza Independencia. Walking along the Ramblas and crossing the Stone Bridge or the Eiffel Bridge brings you right to the heart of the city.
Study in Girona in the heart of the city
What is really worth visiting in the city is its Barri Vell, which borders the historic center. The ancient walls completely surround the old city where the Jewish quarter, the Arab baths, the gardens, and also its emblematic Cathedral are located.
Some corners are so rich in history that they have been chosen to film some episodes of the Game of Thrones series. Just since then, Girona has seen its international tourist numbers grow, reaching an average of 5 million tourists every year, from all over the world.
Within the Barri Vell we also find the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Girona, where the degree course we are talking about takes place. For students, this is a great advantage: what is studied in the classroom can be seen and applied as soon as you leave the building.
The teaching team
In terms of teaching, the faculty boasts among its professors real tourism experts, not only in terms of their theoretical knowledge but also in terms of their level of experience in the sector.
The team at the University of Girona is made up of professionals who try to pass on their knowledge to all their students with the aim of preparing them to really work in the sector. UdG’s plus point is that it’s a small university, which means it’s much easier to build a close bond with classmates and even teachers.
Mediterranean cuisine
The gastronomy of Girona is also worth mentioning. We are talking about Mediterranean and traditional cuisine… Catalan dishes are not lacking in Girona, from Pa amb tomàquet (Spanish toast) and Botifarra (a type of sausage), to Crema Catalana. In addition, the city boasts the presence of an internationally recognized restaurant: El Celler de Can Roca, with three Michelin stars.
The proximity to Barcelona
Another advantage of the city is its proximity to Barcelona. It takes 40 minutes by train to reach the capital of Catalonia. In addition, the province of Girona offers places of tourist interest of all kinds. It starts from the Costa Brava (it is worth highlighting places such as Cadaqués or Peratallada), and then reaches La Cerdanya, passing through Banyoles and its characteristic small lake. Girona is perfectly connected by public transport and allows you to go wherever you want.
An environment that reflects the studies
The public transport infrastructure is obviously of great help to both tourists and students. In fact, those who study can see what is taught in the classroom reflected in practice. Also, as we have said, the city has a high flow of international tourism. Which breaks down the language barriers for international students and makes it very easy to communicate with people.
Campsites in the area
There are many campsites in the area of Girona, near the beach or in the mountains, excellent for studying to find out how Spanish campsites work, what types of public they host, the characteristics of each etc. In fact, the organizers of this course have specially chosen areas where students can not only effectively study the theory but also see with their own eyes how it is put into practice in different contexts, environments and situations. Girona is ideal from this point of view.
