The Falkensteiner Camping Wörthersee has officially entered a new phase of operations. On Friday, 31 July, in Klagenfurt, Falkensteiner Michaeler Tourism Group (FMTG) and Stadtwerke Klagenfurt officially inaugurated the campsite at Metnitzstrand, following the start of its first season under Falkensteiner management on 1 June.
The operation marks the entry of one of Austria’s leading hotel groups into the direct management of an open-air property on Lake Wörthersee. Stadtwerke Klagenfurt, which owns the site, has invested around €3 million in the first phase of its modernisation, while FMTG is responsible for managing and developing the campsite together with the municipal utility company.
The project covers a site of approximately four hectares, with around 330 pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents. Location is one of the campsite’s distinctive features: the site is situated at Metnitzstrand, on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee, just a short distance from Klagenfurt city centre. Through its partnership with Strandbad Klagenfurt, guests can also enjoy access to the lakeside bathing facility.
A phased redevelopment
The works carried out for the 2026 season have primarily focused on reception and guest services. A new reception building has been created, along with new service facilities. A key element of the new offering is Campo°, the campsite’s restaurant, which under the new concept is not exclusively reserved for campsite guests but is also open to external visitors.
The decision to combine the campsite with a restaurant serving external customers is significant, as it broadens the role of the property beyond its traditional accommodation function. The aim is to establish the site as a destination for local residents as well as visitors to the Wörthersee area.
However, the redevelopment does not end with the works completed in 2026. The project has been conceived as a phased process and includes further investment in the years ahead. From the outset of the first season, FMTG and Stadtwerke Klagenfurt have indicated their intention to continue developing the infrastructure and services.
