Italy’s tourism sector is heading toward a record-breaking year. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), international visitor spending in 2025 is expected to surpass €60 billion. The latest Economic Impact Research (EIR) from WTTC paints a picture of a booming industry that will support 3.2 million jobs in 2025 (100,000 more than the previous year) and contribute €237.4 billion to the national economy, nearly 11% of Italy’s GDP. Domestic tourism remains equally strong, with internal spending projected at over €124 billion. Italy thus solidifies its position as the fourth most popular destination in Europe, thanks to a unique offering that blends culture, wellness, luxury, and cuisine.
“Italy is once again at the top of travelers’ wish lists and for good reason,” said Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO. “From the timeless beauty of Rome to the elegance of its coastlines and countryside, Italy delivers a one-of-a-kind experience rich in history, culture, and refined luxury. This record growth reflects the strength of the sector and the passion of the people behind it”.
Rome to host the 2025 WTTC Global Summit
Reinforcing Italy’s central role on the global tourism stage, Rome will host the 25th WTTC Global Summit from 28–30 September 2025, the world’s most prestigious event for the travel and tourism sector, bringing together government leaders, business executives, and experts in sustainable and innovative tourism.
In recent years, the Italian government has strongly focused on sustainability, innovation, and the promotion of lesser-known destinations. Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanchè emphasized the strategic value of the summit: “This is a significant moment for the industry and for Italy, a sign of the ground we’ve regained and of our return as key players on the global stage”, she said. “The WTTC Global Summit will be a unique opportunity to foster synergies between operators, associations, and institutions, while enhancing our product, our offering, and the potential of our tourism ecosystem, ultimately making us more competitive and successful”.
Looking ahead, WTTC forecasts that by 2035, tourism will contribute €282.6 billion to the Italian economy (equal to 12.2% of GDP) and support 3.7 million jobs, with international spending projected to reach €78 billion and domestic spending to hit €142.5 billion. A growing trend that confirms tourism as one of the strategic engines of Italy’s economy.
