Small campsites, big ambitions: the French way to safeguard open-air tourism in rural areas

France, the undisputed European capital of open-air tourism, has lost almost 2,000 campsites in the last 20 years, from around 10,000 in the early 2000s to 8,229 today. According to the Fédération Nationale De L’hôtellerie De Plein Air (FNHPA), these are mainly small structures or built on public land. To stop this hemorrhaging, the Federation believes that a proactive strategy is needed to ensure that France remains a great tourist destination.

On June 7th, 2024, from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon, the FNHPA and the Banque Des Territoires are organising an online conference entitled “Small campsites: big ambitions”. The aim is to present to project sponsors and the public and private tourism ecosystem the national action plan that will be implemented to revive and revitalise rural areas, better distribute tourist flows and make tourism increasingly sustainable.
