Sweden has become a popular camping destination for the German market. During the summer of 2024 (June-August), the number of German visitors staying in Swedish campsites increased by 12% compared to the same period in 2023. For the first time, more than half (51%) of German tourists chose camping over other types of accommodation, such as cottages and apartments (22%), hotels (21%), hostels (4%), and holiday villages (2%). German tourists show a strong appreciation for holidays in close contact with nature, and Sweden is a prime destination thanks to the outdoor experiences it offers, such as the chance to witness the unique spectacle of the Northern Lights.

While the west coast, east coast, and the Scania region, the southernmost county in Sweden, remain among the most popular destinations, German tourism is growing across the entire country, including the northern regions. For instance, Arctic Camp Jokkmokk, located just 15 kilometers from the Arctic Circle, recorded a 12% increase in German guests this year.

The competition is fierce, which is why international promotion is a priority for us,” explains Martin Juhos, CEO of SCR Svensk Camping, an association representing over 300 Swedish campsites. “It’s a long-term effort aimed at raising interest in Sweden as a camping destination and making it easier for international visitors to plan and book their trips“.

To boost the country’s visibility, SCR Svensk Camping has intensified its marketing efforts in Germany by collaborating with PiNCAMP. This partnership has led to the integration of the camping.se platform with Germany’s largest online booking site, allowing 30,000 camping pitches and 2,500 bungalows in Swedish campsites to be booked directly via the German portal. For 2025, the collaboration will expand to include the Netherlands as well.
