Camping in Sweden is experiencing a golden season. The growing interest among travelers in outdoor holidays, combined with a strong and varied offer of facilities suited to every type of guest, has driven the sector to remarkable success in 2025, a year that will be remembered for its record-breaking results: +5.5% overnight stays in open-air accommodations between January and September, for a total of 16.9 million overnight stays. Growth has come from both domestic travelers (+4.7%) and international guests (+8%).
The data comes from Tillväxtverket, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, which highlighted in particular the strong performance of the outdoor sector in September. Overnight stays increased by 12% compared to the same month the previous year, making September 2025 the most successful ever recorded.
Overnight stays increasing across the country
“We are observing a long-term trend where interest continues to grow, both among Swedish and international guests. Sweden’s excellent holiday conditions and the strong mix of camping pitches and cottage accommodation attract an increasing number of visitors,” says Martin Juhos, CEO of Svensk Camping.
Overnight stays at Swedish campsites are rising across virtually all regions, with many counties outperforming the national average of +5.5%. Leading the way is Gävleborg, up by 17%, followed by Västernorrland (+14%) and Jämtland (+13%). Blekinge and Västerbotten also show strong growth (+12%), while Örebro reaches +10%. Uppsala and Värmland both report an 8% increase, and Halland follows with +7%.
Other counties are also showing positive results, though with more moderate increases: Jönköping and Scania record +5%, Västra Götaland +4%, while Kalmar, Gotland, and Södermanland grow by 3%. Dalarna, Stockholm, Norrbotten, and Kronoberg register a +2% rise, with Östergötland at +1%. The only county in decline is Västmanland, which experienced a 4% decrease.
