The camping and holiday village sector today stands at a crossroads between tradition and digital transformation. It was within this context that the first edition of SmartCamping was launched – an event entirely dedicated to technology, digitalisation, and new management models for open-air hospitality.
According to the Spanish magazine Camping Profesional, the event – held on 28 October at Tamarit Beach Resort in Catalonia – brought together around a hundred professionals from across the industry. The atmosphere was one of constructive dialogue, where the exchange of experiences and best practices prevailed over a purely exhibition-style format. Throughout the day, participants discussed how technology can make the management of open-air establishments more efficient, streamline processes, and improve profitability. Particular attention was devoted to customer experience, with several talks exploring the use of apps, automated check-in and check-out systems, and integrated communication platforms for guests. SmartCamping also served as a forum to reflect on the future of the sector, addressing the concept of “Camping 4.0”, where digitalisation is no longer an optional extra but a structural component of competitiveness.
The format of the event – closer to a workshop than to a traditional trade fair – highlighted a pragmatic approach: not only product presentations, but genuine debates on management strategies, staff training, and the ability to meet the evolving expectations of campers. In a market that is becoming increasingly diversified and sensitive to service quality, the role of technology appears crucial in maintaining and strengthening customer loyalty.
The first edition of SmartCamping therefore confirmed that the camping industry is far from static. On the contrary, it is demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt to the technological and social changes shaping modern tourism. For campsite managers, it sends a clear message: innovating does not mean abandoning the identity of one’s campsite, but rather equipping it with the tools needed to make it more efficient, sustainable, and aligned with the contemporary expectations of travellers.
