This is an important breakthrough for Croatia, but also for travellers, for whom it will become easier to enter and visit the country. With the decision taken by the European Council, border controls at sea and land borders with Schengen countries will be abolished.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Schengen area is the basis of the European Union and includes 26 European<\/strong> states which, under the so-called &#8220;Schengen acquis&#8221;, have abolished internal borders. Today there is only one external border (here passenger control takes place). All EU countries are members, except four: Ireland, which has exercised its opt-out, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania. The four non-EU countries that are members are Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>In this year in which we have set important goals, we have achieved the government&#8217;s strategic objectives, from which Croatian citizens and our economy will benefit the most<\/em>,&#8221; Croatian Prime Minister, the conservative<strong> Andrej Plenkovi\u0107<\/strong>, wrote on Twitter after Croatia received the green light to enter the Schengen area.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 73 land border crossings have been eliminated and 12 at sea ports. For air traffic, on the other hand, we will have to wait until March 26, when the summer flight schedule will come into effect.<strong> For cash payments, the transition period will last until January
