The event brought together <strong>the mayors of Cavallino Treporti and Hardenberg<\/strong>, along with representatives from leading <strong>trade associations<\/strong> (FAITA Nordest and HISWA-RECRON) and <strong>regional tourism organisations<\/strong>: Parco Turistico and MarketingOost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative was organised and moderated by <strong>Cornel Straver<\/strong>, Director of <strong>PiNCAMP<\/strong>, which arranged <strong>a tour for a group of campsite operators from Overijssel keen to explore some of the leading open-air tourism destinations<\/strong>in Europe, specifically those in the Veneto region.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two European success stories<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cavallino Treporti<\/strong> is one of Europe\u2019s most advanced open-air destinations and ranks as Italy\u2019s <strong>5th most visited location overall<\/strong>, following Rome, Venice, Milan, and Florence, as pointed out by Mayor Roberta Nesto. <strong>The local coastline boasts 13 kilometres of camping facilities<\/strong>, with more than 30 open-air accommodation establishments. \u201c<em>It\u2019s important for us to engage in dialogue to develop sustainable ways of offering new services in the open-air sector<\/em>,\u201d <strong>said Alberto Ballarin, Councillor for Tourism<\/strong>. \u201c<em>That\u2019s the key thing we\u2019re doing here today<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayor <strong>Mariska Linthorst introduced Hardenberg<\/strong> and its tourism credentials: \u201c<em>It\u2019s a highly significant area from a tourism perspective<\/em>,\u201d she explained. \u201c<em>Tourists spend \u20ac150 million here every year. We have six 5-star campsites and one of the Netherlands\u2019 most visited amusement parks<\/em>\u201d. While the region has seen strong tourism growth in recent years, she emphasised <strong>the need to strike a new balance between the needs of local residents and business development, while preserving the environment<\/strong>. Quality, diversity and innovation are central to its future.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The numbers according to PiNCAMP<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As ever, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pincamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PiNCAMP<\/a> <strong>CEO Uwe Frers brought some enlightening data<\/strong> to the table. \u201c<em>Today we\u2019re focusing on smart management \u2013 making data-driven decisions,<\/em>\u201d he noted. Frers highlighted that <strong>Overijssel ranks highest in the Netherlands for campsite quality, while Cavallino is home to some of the finest campsites in all of Europe<\/strong>. The <strong>average ADAC rating <\/strong>across all European campsites stands at <strong>2.86<\/strong> (on a scale of 1 to 5). Italy\u2019s average is 3.45, the Netherlands scores 3.94, while <strong>Cavallino achieves an impressive 4.57 and Overijssel tops that slightly at 4.58<\/strong>. In terms of quality, the two regions are nearly neck and neck.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <strong>the biggest difference lies in pricing<\/strong>. Across Europe, <strong>an average night<\/strong> for a couple on a pitch for a motorhome with one child and electricity <strong>costs \u20ac52<\/strong>. This rises to \u20ac55 in the Netherlands and \u20ac66 in Italy. <strong>In Cavallino, however, the price jumps to \u20ac90 \u2013 a stark contrast to Overijssel\u2019s \u20ac53,<\/strong> which is even lower than the Dutch national average.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frers also examined <strong>sustainability<\/strong>. On average, <strong>European countries have 27 campsites<\/strong> with some form of environmental certification. Italy has 44; the Netherlands, 65. But a significant gap emerges at the regional level: <strong>Cavallino Treporti has 6 certified sites (14% of Italy\u2019s total), while Overijssel has only 2 (3% of the Dutch total)<\/strong>. The figures suggest that operators in Overijssel have room to grow in terms of both sustainability and pricing.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic impact and investment<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Alberto Granzotto<\/strong>, President of <strong>FAITA Nordest<\/strong> (and of FAITA-FederCamping nationally), pointed out that <strong>open-air tourism in the Veneto region generates \u20ac1.3 billion annually<\/strong> \u2013 42% of which comes from accommodation, with the rest spent locally. \u201c<em>We\u2019re investing heavily in quality, even more so than hotels,<\/em>\u201d he said. \u201c<em>And it\u2019s primarily medium and large businesses driving that investment<\/em>\u201d. Granzotto noted that <strong>Cavallino Treporti alone accounts for 35% of all 5-star open-air facilities in Italy and 53% of those in the Veneto region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also showcased <strong>ongoing projects<\/strong> developed in partnership with <strong>HBenchmark<\/strong> and <strong>eAmbiente<\/strong>. The former <strong>collects and analyses tourism data and market trends<\/strong>, while the latter is helping to develop <strong>an ESG sustainability protocol<\/strong> that will provide a clearer picture of environmental performance within Italian campsites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Petra Ellens<\/strong>, Regional Manager of <strong>HISWA-RECRON<\/strong> \u2013 the Dutch association representing campsites and boating companies \u2013 outlined the broader picture in the Netherlands. <strong>Tourism there is worth \u20ac104 billion and supports 813,000 jobs<\/strong> \u2013 that\u2019s one in every thirteen people employed in the country. Annual overnight stays now <strong>exceed 8 million<\/strong>, marking <strong>a rise of 2.2 million<\/strong> since 2014. However, the sector also <strong>faces challenges<\/strong>: a 50% decline in student visitors, rising VAT and tourist taxes, seasonal staff shortages, political indifference, and overly rigid regulations.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The power of promotion<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final discussion of the day featured <strong>Paolo Bertolini<\/strong>, Vice President of <strong>Parco Turistico<\/strong>, and <strong>Wendy Weijdema<\/strong>, Vice President of <strong>MarketingOost<\/strong>. Both regional promotion agencies presented their respective <strong>strategies for increasing visibility and visitor engagement<\/strong>, highlighting the extensive work being done to enhance the appeal of their destinations and to ensure tourists have all the information they need for an ideal experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This meeting between Cavallino Treporti and Overijssel marked <strong>an important exchange between two leading regions in the European open-air hospitality sector<\/strong>. By sharing experiences, data and strategies, the event <strong>shed light on both the similarities and differences<\/strong> between them \u2013 but above all, it underscored a shared commitment to tackling challenges through quality, innovation, and sustainability.
