The Germans, notoriously inclined to spend their summer holidays abroad, will mostly remain within their borders for this year. This was revealed by a study carried out in Germany, last June, by Tamoil and the chain of HEM service stations, according to which 86 percent of Germans said they did not want to go abroad, at least for this summer. Of the 3,538 adults asked, one person in two considers it too risky to travel to other European countries. 50% of the sample had already booked a trip, but a third decided to cancel it.

The result is that almost a quarter of the people who responded (23%) will enjoy the summer at home, while 36% will devote themselves to day trips outside the city. Among those who have decided to move, only 7% think of using the plane, while the others will mainly use their own four-wheeled vehicle (90%). Favorite destinations are those with beaches: Baltic Sea (24%), North Sea (17%) and Lake Constance (12%).

In addition to the issue of Coronavirus-related concern, there is also the economic one. The pandemic has in fact had negative effects on spending power and thus a third of respondents say they are paying particular attention to their finances, while 11 percent will not go on vacation because in this difficult 2020 they cannot afford it. Of the 24 percent of those who said they managed to put something aside for the summer, 22 percent prefer to invest that money in a different way than they expected, by investing in goods for the home or garden. In short, to see the Germans returning to the streets of Europe in great numbers, you will have to be patient.
