In many European countries, the camping season has lights and shadows. This is not the case in Switzerland, where according to TCS Camping the summer of 2020 is about to become one of records. In fact, the demand has never been so high and overnight stays are growing by double digits. The Swiss facilities reopened, after the lockdown, on June 6th and already in that month the 112,493 overnight stays recorded were 20 percent more than the previous year.

At the end of August, the total number of overnight stays since the beginning of the year was 606,000, with an increase of 13% compared to 2019. “During the summer holidays, the demand was significantly higher than our accommodation possibilities“, explained Olivier Grützner, TCS Head of Tourism and Leisure.

Campsites by lakes and rivers were the first to announce sold out. However, the Alpine region of Grisons, which made a leap forward by 47%, was surprising. The demand for glamping was also very high: the approximately 240 accommodations available in the TCS campsites had a very high occupancy rate and those with private bathrooms were sold out continuously from the beginning of June until mid-August. The guests were mainly Swiss, with a share of 90 percent of the attendance.

The forecasts for September and October are also very positive: for these two months, online bookings exceed those of the previous year by about 120% and TCS has already reacted to this massive request by deciding to extend the season by two weeks.
