In Switzerland, glamping also inspired the Million Stars Hotel project

It’s called the Million Stars Hotel and it is an original Swiss initiative to support tourism even in the lesser known tourist regions. It is about fifty “rooms” distributed throughout the country that have the common feature of allowing the view of the starry sky from your bed. They are offered by as many entrepreneurs who, thanks to a series of contributions from the New Regional Policy (NPR), have been able to create a truly exclusive offer. The project was inspired by the growing success of accommodation close to nature, pop-up hotels (created in 2018) and the increasingly popular “glamping”.

Examples include a gondola lift transformed into a tiny house on Piz Nair or a “Cube” on the Eggishorn with a front window on the Aletsch glacier. Waiting for guests in St. Moritz is an observatory converted into a hotel room, while water lovers will find an ideal setting in the elegant Tamaro Night Sky on Lake Maggiore, rather than in the futuristic Plexiglas Tubbo Sky on the Lake of Thun. If desired, the waters can also be plowed: the Sealander is a camping boat that offers a romantic starry night in the middle of Lake Thun. Those who love sleeping in the open air under the stars can opt for an outdoor bed, perhaps in Oberems in the Valais, in La Ferrière in the Bernese Jura or in the Toggenburg region. Inside the Bubble you can sleep well sheltered in picturesque places in Thurgau. as well as on the terrace of the Eurotel hotel in Montreux or the Widder Hotel in Zurich. The more adventurous will choose a night in a transparent tent suspended between the trees, such as at the San Grato di Carona park, to feel even closer to the stars.

A jury composed of marketing and hotel industry experts selected the 50 rooms of the Million Stars Hotel project. Rates for the public range from 80 to 800 Swiss Francs for two people per night, including breakfast, and the rooms will remain open until October, with closing dates varying according to the area and altitude. To promote the initiative, a specific section of the Switzerland Tourism website has been developed, accessible at myswitzerland.com/millionstarshotel, from which you can book your favorite room directly.
