The year 2023 will mark the return of travel in most people’s plans. This is confirmed by the exhaustive study that Booking.com has carried out to analyse how travel will change and which has seen the participation of more than 24,000 people in 32 countries. Not only that, according to Spanish industry experts, a new optimistic sentiment towards holidays, despite general economic and geopolitical uncertainty, will characterise the new year compared to 2022 at an international level.
Travel trends in 2023 according to Booking.com
- Back to basics: many people choose trips during which they can return to a simple lifestyle in contact with nature, camping seems to be the ideal option in these cases.
- Fun outside the usual destinations: for many there is a desire to experiment and find ideas for exciting holidays outside the usual destinations
- Nostalgia for bygone times: even among millennials and Generation Z, there is an interest in pre-digital travel, in places where they can rediscover atmospheres from movies or that evoke other eras.
- Attention to budget: in a context of global economic uncertainty, travel in 2023 will still be a priority, but people will look for the best ways to save money, such as using discounts and loyalty programmes, looking for off-season destinations, but above all planning further in advance to get a better deal.
Spain among the most popular destinations
Germans, British, French, Dutch, Italians, Swedes, and Irish continue to choose Spain as their favourite destination when planning a trip abroad, bringing bookings back to close to pre-pandemic numbers. This can be seen from the Market Trend Reports for the 2022-2023 winter season published these days by the Spanish Tourism Institute (TURESPAÑA). Italians, specifically, favour Spain as a destination especially during the winter months, preferring it to France, Greece, the United Kingdom, or Portugal.
