In 2024, the open-air tourism sector in Tuscany recorded around 10 million overnight stays in campsites and holiday villages across the region. This was revealed by FAITA-FederCamping Toscana, citing data provided by the Centro Studi Turistici of Florence. This segment accounts for 23% of the total overnight stays by tourists who choose Tuscany as their destination.
The open-air accommodations in Tuscany – over 230 between campsites and tourist villages – welcomed a clientele made up of 55.5% Italian tourists, mainly from Tuscany, Lombardy, Piedmont, Lazio, and Emilia-Romagna, and 44.5% foreign tourists, primarily from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, and Poland.
Claudio Galassi, recently appointed president of FAITA Toscana, emphasized the importance of these results, highlighting that despite the economic challenges of 2024, there has been a significant increase in international tourist flows. According to Galassi, in many coastal municipalities, these hospitality facilities are the cornerstone of the local summer economy – a contribution that must be acknowledged and supported through appropriate policies and infrastructure.
“In recent years, we have witnessed an evolution in open-air facilities, which have been able to anticipate and respond to market demands,” said Galassi. “Tourists are increasingly seeking higher quality standards and a wide range of services to meet their needs, with growing attention to environmental sustainability and a desire to preserve the landscape, the territory, and contact with nature”.
The new president has placed among his priorities the protection of the territory, the strengthening of dialogue with local and regional institutions, the enhancement of non-urban areas, and the implementation of concrete measures in favor of environmental sustainability.
Leonardo Marras, Regional Councillor for Economy and Tourism in Tuscany, acknowledged the increasingly important role of open-air tourism in the region. He credited this to an offer that has undergone a deep transformation in the post-pandemic period, through investments and diversification of services, aimed at attracting a broader audience.
This success is also reflected in the increase in reviews published on Booking, Google, and Tripadvisor. According to CST, between 2018 and 2024, the number of tourist points of interest, spread across about 50 Tuscan municipalities, rose from 191 to 212, while digital traces increased from 15,438 to 24,953. Also notable is the satisfaction ratingexpressed by visitors regarding the facilities chosen for their stays: Tuscan villages and campsites received an average rating of 83.8 out of 100 from foreign tourists and 81.4 from Italian ones.
Across the board, there is a clear and growing demand for accommodations immersed in nature, equipped with the same comforts found in hotels and holiday homes. This has led to an evolution in camping, with an increase in offerings such as bungalows, mobile homes, and glamping.
