La Seu d’Urgell hosted the opening on Thursday of the 2nd Congress of Catalan Campsites, organised by the Catalan Campsite Federation (FCC), with the participation of more than 300 industry professionals, institutional representatives and national and international experts. Within this framework, the organisation presented a pilot training project aimed at strengthening risk management and emergency response capabilities in outdoor tourism establishments.
The initiative has been developed with the support of the regional administration and responds to a new context shaped by climate change, evolving regulations and the need to improve the sector’s operational preparedness in the face of potential incidents.
Training and drills in multiple phases
The project will be implemented in several stages. In an initial phase, awareness sessions and technical training will be organised for campsite owners, municipal officials and professionals involved in self-protection plans.
Subsequently, practical actions will be introduced through drills and exercises coordinated with the Generalitat’s emergency services, with the aim of enhancing real operational response in risk situations. The pilot phase will begin in the province of Girona, with the intention of later extending it across the whole of Catalonia.
Safety as a strategic priority
During the opening of the congress, FCC President Miquel Gotanegra emphasised that Catalonia’s leading position in European camping requires continued progress in areas such as prevention, safety and professionalisation.
Under the motto “Nature to enjoy, safety to trust”, the congress addressed over two days topics including the impact of climate change, risk management, early warning meteorological systems, coordination with emergency services, and the application of new technologies and artificial intelligence to the sector.
Catalonia, a leading camping destination in Europe
Catalonia currently offers 352 campsites and 267,545 pitches. According to figures presented by the federation, the sector exceeded 21 million overnight stays in 2025, accounting for more than 30% of the region’s total tourism. The FCC represents 85% of Catalonia’s camping capacity.
