Tourism’s contribution to the global economy continues to strengthen, supported by above-average growth rates. This is highlighted by the latest Economic Impact Research (EIR) from the World Travel & Tourism Council, according to which the sector recorded growth significantly higher than that of the global economy.
According to WTTC data, in 2025 tourism’s contribution to global GDP reached a record level of US$11.6 trillion, equal to 9.8% of the total, while the sector’s growth rate (4.1%) exceeded that of the global economy, which stood at 2.8%, by almost 50%. International overnight arrivals this year amounted to 1.54 billion, equivalent to 4.2 million people travelling every day. Figures that confirm tourism as one of the pillars of international economic expansion.
Further strengthening this picture are employment figures: the sector accounted for 366 million jobs worldwide, equal to 10.9% of the total, contributing decisively to job creation, with one in three new jobs generated by tourism. A result that marks a historic milestone and underlines the growing weight of the sector at global level.
Regional outlook: Asia-Pacific in strong momentum, North America slower
Within this extremely positive context, however, significant differences emerge between world regions. The Asia-Pacific region stands out as the most dynamic, with tourism GDP growth of 8.1% in 2025, driven by market reopening, the recovery of international demand and strong regional connectivity. The total value thus reached US$3.29 trillion.
By contrast, North America recorded more limited performance, with growth stopping at just 1%, for a total of US$3.05 trillion. This trend reflects both the slow recovery of international tourism flows and the characteristics of a now mature market. The gap between the two regions highlights how factors such as public policies, levels of investment and the degree of openness to international markets continue to significantly influence the development trajectories of tourism globally.
