Camping in the UK: growing passion for the sea – Devon tops the list for quality sites

Varn, a UK-based agency specializing in SEO, research, and data analysis, has examined review data from the online booking platform Pitchup, focusing on the counties of the United Kingdom. Topping the list for the best-rated campsites, glamping, and caravan experiences is the county of Devon, officially crowned by campers as the UKs top destination for outdoor stays.

Devon boasts the highest number of highly rated sites, 181 campsites received scores of 9 or 10 out of 10, more than any other area in the country. Cornwall and North Yorkshire follow closely behind, revealing a strong camper preference for coastal and countryside getaways.

The Varn’s report clearly highlights South West England as the UK’s leading camping region, attracting and satisfying visitors thanks to its quality facilities and proximity to scenic seaside towns. This reflects a growing trend: a preference for coastal destinations. In fact, online searches containing keywords like campsites by the beach” rose by 33% between 2023 and 2024, underscoring the popularity of staycations, holidays at home, among British campers looking for nature and relaxation.

Devon, Cornwall and North Yorkshire: the top destinations according to campers

According to the UKs Office for National Statistics (ONS), camping trips across the UK increased by 29% between 2023 and 2024. At the same time, as noted above, searches for seaside campsites grew by over 30%. Within this context, the data from Pitchup – collected and analyzed by Varn – has highlighted the excellence of campsites in Devon, Cornwall, and North Yorkshire, as reflected in their outstanding reviews from campers.

Devon, at the top of the ranking with 181 campsites rated between 9 and 10, is particularly loved for its dual identity: the county offers both countryside retreats and direct beach access. Locations such as Yelland, Bideford, Frithelstock, and Woolacombe are among the most popular choices for open-air holidays, offering a wide range of options for families, pet-friendly travellers, and nature lovers alike.

In second place is Cornwall, with 179 top-rated campsites. Its dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and charming seaside villages make it one of the UKs most captivating destinations. Areas such as Cambrose, Barripper, Crankie, and Falmouth offer a variety of experiences, catering to those in search of peace and quiet or more lively outdoor adventures.

North Yorkshire ranks third with 129 highly rated campsites. Known for its dramatic coastline and lush green landscapes, this northern county is ideal for those seeking both adventure and immersion in nature. Coastal locations like Robin Hood’s Bay are perfect for watersports and active holidays, while inland areas such as Coneysthorpe, Malton, Nawton, and Welburn offer an authentic taste of the English countryside.
