The camping sector in Sweden continues to experience a period of strong growth, as demonstrated by the 17.3 million overnight stays recorded in 2025, a result increasingly driven by the presence of international guests. In order to strengthen their attractiveness and competitiveness on the market, a growing number of sites are investing in quality, sustainability and promotion.

One of the tangible signs of this development is the increase in the number of certified campsites: ahead of the summer of 2026, 17 new sites have joined Svensk Camping and will therefore also become part of the Camping.se platform. Membership of the Swedish camping association entails obtaining a certification that confirms compliance with quality standards and specific requirements, verified during the membership process.

Today, camping represents the main form of tourist accommodation during the summer months in 17 of Sweden’s 21 counties and, in many areas of the country, campsites generate more than half of all tourist overnight stays during the season. This central role is encouraging the sector to focus increasingly on quality and sustainability as strategic drivers for the future.

“We are pleased that the industry’s interest in development is so high. All new member companies strengthen our network and support our goal of creating Europe’s best camping experiences. We now have a total of 315 member companies, of which 180 are also classified,” says Martin Juhos, Chief Executive Officer of Svensk Camping.

New system to certify quality and sustainability

To obtain certification, campsites must comply with a series of structural requirements and the standards set out by the Svensk Camping system, which are verified during the association’s membership procedure. For guests, this represents a concrete guarantee that the campsite complies with current legislation and with the sector’s rules regarding business ethics, professionalism and responsible business management.

This year, Svensk Camping has also introduced a new system dedicated to quality and sustainability, which has been well received by operators in the sector. More than 50 campsites have already completed the new environmental certification programme developed specifically for the industry, while the number of sites classified under the star rating system has increased by more than 20%, reaching a total of 180 campsites.

“Sweden has excellent conditions for succeeding in international markets, but competition to attract visitors is strong and more and more people are actively choosing destinations with a clear quality and sustainability profile. For this reason, joint work on these issues is also a fundamental element for Sweden as an international camping destination”, concludes Martin Juhos.
