The year 2023 started with great news for the camping industry in Germany, the Monthly Survey in Tourism of the Federal Statistical Office has just released the data referring to the month of October 2022: over 39 million overnight stays registered in accommodation facilities . These are large numbers that confirm the new annual record, which has already exceeded the 38.5 million overnight stays that had been forecast for the current year.
Fewer foreign tourists
The majority of accommodation guests are Germans (almost 90.3 per cent), then come the Dutch and the Swiss. In 2022, the number of foreign tourists in Germany fell by a total of 25.9 per cent and in particular by 17.4 per cent in campsites. Christian Günther, managing director of the Federal Association of the Camping Industry in Germany (BVCD), commenting on these figures positively and saying he was satisfied with the tourism trend in his country, addressed the German National Tourist Board, emphasising, however, the need for more investment in foreign marketing, specifically aid packages to increase the development of holidays in Germany by foreigners. The BVCD, based in Berlin, represents more than 1,200 campsites.
The development of open-air holidays

As can be seen from the graph, campsites in Germany have developed strongly over the last 10 years, confirming that outdoor tourism is also becoming a conscious choice dictated by the desire to live in contact with nature, stimulated, no doubt, by the isolation at home that has taken place over the last two years due to the health emergency caused by Covid-19.
