The Conference of Mayors of the Venetian Coast has presented the 2024 Report The municipalities of the Venetian Coast and tourism activities, an in-depth analysis of the tourism sector conducted by the Tolomeo working group, led by Professor Paolo Feltrin from the University of Trieste. Now in its third edition, the report provides a detailed overview of both the past and present state of tourism along the Venetian coastline, outlining challenges and opportunities for the future.

It serves as a crucial tool to guide tourism operators in fostering sustainable sector growth. The study’s findings – shared with mayors, economic stakeholders, and industry representatives through dedicated meetings – support strategic planning for investments and initiatives aimed at strengthening the region’s position in both national and international tourism markets.

This is the third year of our in-depth study on tourism along the Venetian coast, a project we launched in the year of Covid”, explains Roberta Nesto, President of the Conference of mayors of the venetian coast and mayor of Cavallino-Treporti. “Each municipality conducts its own studies, but a comprehensive overview of the entire coastline is also necessary, and that is exactly what we are working on”.

The study also highlights the importance of teamwork among institutions, businesses, and local communities, an essential synergy to ensure the competitiveness of the Venetian Coast and successfully address future challenges.

Tourism transformations and industry challenges

The 2024 Report focuses on two key topics: the transformations that have taken place in the 21st century and labor-related challenges in the tourism sector. The first section examines how tourism has evolved over the past decades, while the second addresses the difficulties within the labor market, emphasizing that a shortage of skilled workers remains one of the industry’s main issues.

As Professor Feltrin points out, todays labor market favors workers, partly due to demographic decline. For employers, retaining staff by offering better conditions and stronger incentives is now essential.

Another key aspect of the study is the need to enhance the tourism offering, particularly through a stronger digital presence. Tourist choices are increasingly influenced by online tools, making digital promotion and targeted marketing crucial. Feltrin stresses the importance of segmenting the audience, since young travelers and senior tourists, for instance, have vastly different needs.

Finally, Jesolo’s Mayor, Christofer De Zotti, underscores another pressing priority for the tourism industry: extending the tourist season. According to De Zotti, the focus should be on attracting visitors beyond peak months and prioritizing quality tourism over sheer visitor numbers. To achieve this, investment in cycling routes, environmental conservation, and cultural heritage is essential, key strategies to make the region an appealing destination year-round.
