Pitchup.com, the booking platform for outdoor holidays in Europe, has released its closing figures for 2022, with important numbers especially for Italian camping and glamping facilities. The site closes 2022 by leaving behind a very positive year: the platform reveals that it had more than 33 million visits to the site, while more than £60 million were spent by holidaymakers to stay in one of the structures on the platform.
A record year
The total number of nights booked through Pitchup.com in 2022 was 5 million, with Piedmont (+426%), Valle D’Aosta (+300%), and Campania (+266%) among the Italian regions that had the largest increase in bookings compared to 2021, setting unprecedented numbers. This result confirms that outdoor holidays are increasingly sought after and loved by holidaymakers, who are increasingly choosing original places where they can experience nature, taking into account fundamental elements such as sustainability, freedom and physical activity. Without forgetting comfort as a criterion of choice, i.e. the search for quality facilities, as in the case of glamping, immersed in greenery but equipped with all services.
The most sought-after Italian destinations
In terms of user reviews, the top regions in Pitchup’s 2022 ranking are Sicily (with an average score of 8.9), Apulia (8.8), and Lombardy (8.7). As far as trends are concerned, there is an increase in families travelling with pets (+48% of requests), facilities offering extra services such as fishing activities (+99%), transfers (+285%), and gastronomic experiences with local products (+153%).
Outdoor holidays even in winter
Italy’s camping and glamping facilities have recorded excellent access even at this start of the year, despite the cold temperatures almost everywhere. Looking at planned overnight stays on the Pitchup platform between December 21, 2022 and March 20, 2023, the site recorded a 227% increase in bookings in Italy compared to the 2021 figures for the same period, just as spending on Italian camping and glamping facilities rose by 266%. A positive trend that began in 2022 when holidaymakers wanted to treat themselves to an open-air trip to Italy: over 158% more if we look at the 2021 figures.
