32,937,634 overnight stays. According to data released by the Camping.info portal, citing the Federal Statistical Office, this is the result achieved by German campsites in the 2021 season. Compared to 2020 it is 3 percent less and -8% compared to 2019, which was the record year for the sector. However, expectations for the current season are very positive and the goal is to reach numbers never reached before.
After all, the foundations are those of a constantly growing recreational vehicle market. In Germany, sales of caravans and motorhomes exceeded 100,000 units for the second consecutive year. In total, there are over 1,5 million vehicles on the road today: the all-time high.
With 6.1 million overnight stays and an increase of almost 9%, Bavaria is the most popular camping region. Followed by the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein (5.3 million, +14 percent), as well as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (4.8 million, -13 percent) and Lower Saxony (4.8 million, +4.4 percent). Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein benefited from the first federal states’ opening strategies, while due to a catastrophic flood in July, there were only 1.9 million overnight stays in Rhineland-Palatinate, which corresponds to a minus 29%. In 2021, 95 percent of German campsites saw domestic guests: the drop in overnight stays by foreign tourists was 24.5 percent (1.6 million overnight stays).
