Sweden’s camping sector has reached a new milestone: between June and August 2025, 12.8 million overnight stays were recorded at Swedish campsites, marking a 3.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to data from the Tillväxtverket agency. This unprecedented achievement highlights the growing popularity of outdoor holidays in the Scandinavian country. Camping has once again established itself as the preferred accommodation choice for European tourists visiting Sweden, accounting for 45% of all overnight stays during the summer months.
Overall, Swedish visitors accounted for 71% of overnight stays, while 29% were from international tourists. The most significant increase was recorded in July, with a 5.2% growth compared to the same month in 2024. The positive trend extends throughout the year, as 16,127,553 overnight stays were registered across Swedish campsites from January to August 2025, representing a 6% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Strong growth in the German market
Sweden’s summer season proved particularly successful, according to Martin Juhos, General Director of Svensk Camping, the national organization representing the Swedish camping sector. Juhos noted that it is encouraging to see such a strong increase in overnight stays by Swedish tourists (+71%), as growth has so far been largely driven by international visitors. For him, camping is rapidly becoming an attractive, accessible, and increasingly appreciated form of holiday.
Among international markets, Germany is gaining ground, demonstrating significant growth potential. From January to August 2025, overnight stays by German tourists in Sweden increased by 4.4%, reaching 1.41 million. This brings Germany closer to Norway, which remains the largest international market in terms of camping overnight stays, despite a slight decline to 1.67 million (-1.8%).
