CampingVillage.Marketing’s team of experts has been following the evolution of tourists‘ needs and demands for years, asking targeted questions to thousands of travellers who love spending their holidays outdoors in order to understand how, when and according to which criteria they choose the perfect camping village for them. From the analysis of this data comes the recently published Observatory 2022, comparing the results with historical data. From this study, new trends and specific tendencies emerged, allowing camping village managers to have a more solid basis for planning their future activities.

The team extrapolated the data from the hundreds of thousands of enquiries that tourists made to facilities via the CampingVillage.Travel portal network in 2022. It also checked whether the trends stated by tourists are actually reflected in their booking and search habits via the promotional portals. The data is collected and offered free of charge to industry professionals in the CampingVillage.Marketing Observatory 2022 document, containing 197 statistics, divided into 11 categories, relating to 25 specific topics.

Growing interest in open-air holidays

From the graph, it is clear that tourists’ interest in the outdoor holiday sector is constantly growing. The views of the portal network increased by 7.76% compared to 2021 and by 52.2% compared to 2019, the year taken as a benchmark in terms of ‘normality’.

Early research on accommodation is the most accurate

Segmenting requests by date of receipt, it can be seen that in the first few months of the year tourists make a more careful selection of camping villages to contact, so the proportion of individual requests is higher than in other months. Approaching summer, with the facilities starting to fill up, tourists tend to use this channel as an aggregator of facilities and contact several of them at the same time.

Tourists begin to consider travelling in less crowded months

The concentration of holiday demand in the summer months is a well-known fact, but the trend highlighted by the latest data shows that while demand for June has not yet returned to 2019 levels (the year we consider as a comparison for ‘normality’ and optimal data), for May and September demand is much higher.

Request for pitches and traveling with pets are growing

Two other data are particularly interesting. The first is the growing demand for pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents, which have gone from around 7% in 2019 to around 11% in 2022.

The other is the growth in the number of people taking their pets on holiday. If three years ago we were talking about just over 5%, in 2022 the figure was abundantly exceeded 21%.
