The first 6 months of 2022 mark an increase of over 11% in overnight stays in German campsites, thus exceeding the numbers of the first half of 2019, the reference year before the pandemic. An excellent figure that, if confirmed also in absolute terms at the end of the year, demonstrates once again how much camping is a choice pursued by more and more people, inspired by the desire to live outdoors as much as possible.

Most overnight stays (92%) are attributable to German campers, while the Netherlands (460,000 overnight stays), followed by neighboring Switzerland (220,696 overnight stays) and Belgium (58,130 overnight stays), remain the most important foreign market for the camping industry in Germany.

Christian Günther, general manager of the Federal Association of the Camping Industry in Germany (BVCD), which currently represents more than 1,200 campsites, commented on these 14,220,927 overnight stays, “It is difficult to make predictions for the second half of the year. The activity during the summer holidays has varied from region to region and, in light of the uncertain forecasts and the current burdens for consumers, we look to autumn with lower expectations”. Specifically, Bavaria remains at the top of the federal statesranking with over 2.6 million overnight stays. This is followed by Lower Saxony (2,166,550 overnight stays) and Schleswig-Holstein (1,902,499 overnight stays).
